A few months ago I read Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, and I adored it! I knew the story beforehand, because I’ve watched the 2005 movie with Keira Knightly a couple of times. But anyway, yesterday I was kinda bored and then I remembered that while reading P&P I heard about several adaptations of the book. One of the adaptations was The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. I had no clue what it actually was, until I looked it up yesterday, and apparently it’s a youtube series about Elizabeth and her life but then in this century.
I was intrigued! I have watched one youtube series before and that one was a lot of fun, so I thought let’s give it a go. The episodes are all about 5 minutes long and it’s basically Lizzie sitting in front of a camera talking about her family and all the drama (there is a lot of drama), and she reenacts scenes which is hilarious. You also get a view into the live of her two sisters (yes she only has two sisters in this version) Lydia and Jane. And of course Wickham, mister Collins, Bingly (in this version called Bing Lee), and Darcy are there too!
Even though there are many changes made, not only in the number of sisters, it is still a lot like the book. I loved finding parallels between the book and the series. I do love the setting of the original book, but I think it is pretty cool how they changed the setting such that the story is still the same but it is quite reasonable. Like, for example, that they don’t marry after only knowing each other for a short time or the fact that people have guests over for literally months without it having a reason. These things would be considered really weird in our time!
One thing that I found out a little too late, is the fact that there are 100 episodes, and that does not even include the episodes from Lydia. And I freaking watched all of them in the last 24 hours. Did I not have anything better to do? Yeah. But did I do that? Nope. So warning: If you don’t have time to watch it, DON’T. Seriously don’t, because stopping is very hard. Especially since the episodes are really short, it is way too easy to just watch one more episodes and suddenly find out you’re at episode 50.
Anyway, if you do have some self-control, have time to watch it, and love Pride & Prejudice, you should watch this adaptation!
