Book Travelling Thursday | Mental Health Matters!

Book Travelling Thursday is hosted by  Danielle from Danielle’s Book Blog and Catia from The Girl Who Read Too Much. You can find more info in their goodreads group. This week’s theme is “Because Mental Health matters! Choose a book that deals with mental health.”

I have chosen It’s Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini:

Ambitious New York City teenager Craig Gilner is determined to succeed at life – which means getting into the right high school to get into the right job. But once Craig aces his way into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School, the pressure becomes unbearable. He stops eating and sleeping until, one night, he nearly kills himself.

Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.

Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness.

I just found out that Ned Vizzini himself actually suffered from depression and committed suicide at 32. That’s so sad 😦

The Original Cover

The Dutch Cover

Sadly there is no Dutch cover.

My Favourite Cover

The original cover is beautiful! Not only is the illustration awesome, it also fits with the story really well. And I love the colours!

My Least Favourite Covers

Left: Italian, Right: German. I just don’t like these, they look like a book for children or something.

What is your favourite cover?
