The Bad Book Project | Announcement & looking for contributors!

Short Story Society isn’t even officially over yet (although today is the last day (officially)), and I already have come up with another project! You have all heard of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, which takes place in November), I presume. Writing a book in a month is something that is an amazing accomplishment! Last year I didn’t participate because I simply didn’t have the time. And because 50.000 words is a whole lot! This year I’m going to try to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo instead (I didn’t even really know it existed before). Camp NaNoWriMo is basically the same as NaNoWriMo, but you can decide on your own goal and you have cabins with fellow writers that can motivate and help you if necessary. It seems like a great alternative if NaNoWriMo is a little too difficult yet.

And from this, and an afternoon of watching YouTube videos, a new project arises! I’m going to try to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo in April, and in the weeks between now and April I’m going to post about all the things you need to know about writing a novel. Of course, I’m not an expert, so I’m going to do research and write about what I’m doing in preparation. Also, this is where you come in, I’m looking for people with experience in NaNoWriMo or writing books in general, to do a guest post about one of the following topics:

  • Developing a plot. Topics that are related to this: how to get from an idea to a story line, how not to make your plot too predictable, and how to keep your story going.
  • Creating realistic and believable characters. Topics that are related to this: diversity, how toΒ make them communicate and talk, and character development.
  • World-building. Topics that are related to this: how to make a world come alive, how to develop new technologies, how the norms and laws in this world affect characters, etc. (mainly for fantasy / sci-fi writers)
  • Outlining your plot. Topics that are related to this: how and why to outline, and which different ways there are to outline.
  • Writing in general. Topics that are related to this: writing-style, dialogue, what to avoid while writing and how to get past a writer’s-block.

I’m going to spent 2-3 weeks on each topic, with 1 post each week (at least, that’s the plan). There are twelve weeks between now and April, so I’m goingΒ do 12 post in total.

If you are a writer and you’d like to help me out, I can always return the favour by doing a some advertising of your blog and/or of your book (if it is published or going to be published, that is). Contact me via liaislost@outlook.com and/or comment below! Please let me know what you’d like to write about. I would love to get at least one guest-post on each of the five topics, and if you’ve got any ideas for more posts or other topics, it is very welcome!

  1. This sounds like such a fun idea! I’d be honored to be a part of something like this. I’m interested in either the World-Building or Creating Realistic and Believable Characters.

  2. What a cool thing to do! I would love to participate! I am always up for seeing others perspectives on writing better characters and better novels. I was thinking of joining Camp nano this year as well so this is perfect.

      1. I hope so. I’m about a third of the way through last years nano and I love the plot/characters. It’s just focusing enough and finding enough time to work on it again πŸ˜•
