Camp NaNoWriMo: weekly update #1

I’m cheating and writing this way ahead of time. When you’re reading this, I’ll be at a festival and not writing (haha nope I forgot to schedule it so it’s Monday now and I need to go to uni). As I’m writing this it’s Wednesday, and Camp NaNoWriMo hasn’t even started yet.

For those who don’t know what it is, Camp NaNoWriMo is basically a smaller version of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), in which you can set your own goal. For NaNoWriMo your goal is 50k, but for Camp NaNoWriMo I set my goal to 15k. This is not a lot but I’ll be going on a vacation in the middle of July and won’t be able to write from then on. I also have an exam this week, and well, today I’m at a festival so I won’t be writing much either.

My novel idea is an adapted version of the one I wrote about a few weeks ago. It’s called Our Shattered Minds (I think you heard about it by now, I’ve talked about it so so much haha). It’s about four outcasts: an assassin who loves playing with other’s hearts (Emery), a blacksmith who just wants to be left alone (Felton), a nanny with anger issues (Noa) (I hate the word nanny almost as much as Noa does xD) and a wanderer running from his past (Brim). They live in a world with magic, but it’s rare and special. They all hide their powers, which are blood, fire/smoke, seeing the future, and electricity respectively. People with magic have been disappearing and an underground rebellion arises, and all four of them get caught up in different ways. This is where their stories come together.

I finished my outline, which I’m super proud of because last time I made a super shitty one. This one is much better and I actually followed some guidelines and tips. It’s basically: we’re all okay – wth is going on?? – okay we can fix this – we’re screwed – maybe we can? – rising action – epicness – omg point – the end 😀

Doesn’t that sounds good?? But in all seriousness, I divided my book into 11 parts, which I then divided into 4 chapters which are written from the four different perspectives. I’m not sure how that will work in the second half of my book because then the characters are often together but I’ll see what happens.

So with 44 chapters, which I think will be about 2k each, I’ll hopefully end up with an 88k manuscript. Which kind of scares me a lot because 88k is so much *help*

I’m kind of writing this with the idea in mind that there might be a sequel? One day? I’m seeing a future of more epicness with my characters.

This part of the post I wrote on Monday.

Beginning: 5,096
Day 1: 1,263 (total: 6,393) (something is wrong in this calculation but I don’t feel like checking it haha)
Day 2: – (total: 6.393)

I worked on the third chapter, which is about Felton. Today I’m going to try to write the fourth about Noa today.

It was silent in the room again and normally he would love the silence, but this silence was loaded and heavy, like an anchor pulling down his mood.

He was good at judging people, at seeing through the smile they plastered on their face, and this girl definitely had her secrets.

In these moments, all he wanted was to just leave. Leave this city, leave his job, the people. But he knew that if he left, he would truly not have anything left.

How is NaNoWriMo going for you guys? Have you written some things you’re proud of already? What are you most excited about in your WIP?

  1. I’ve actually been doing stuff for the first two days of camp nano (and my bday is tomorrow) so I haven’t gotten any writing done but I’m hoping to get some done today

    1. Your story sounds great!!💗 I hope you reach your goal by the end of the month! I completely forgot about Camp NaNoWriMo but it’s okay because I’m focusing on blogging at the moment.

      1. I hope so too! Focusing on one thing at a time is a great plan, I’m juggling everything and that’s a bit busy and stressful, but fun!

  2. You can do it! I’d always thought NaNoWriMo was only a one-month thing and always 50K, so you learn something every day. I don’t think I’d have the commitment to do it, so I applaud you. You’re doing great so far — and with an awesome idea.

  3. HAHAHA IN MY CURRENT PROJECT I HAVE AN ASSASSIN TOO. *high fives* And in my old novel, I had a character named Emery (but went by Mery because one time I forgot the E and it sounded cool XD). ANYWAYS. Your characters all sound amazing! As does your plot but characters are my favorite things EVER and I just love love the sound of yours omg. 😍 This definitely sounds like something I would write/read! AND DUDE YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL WRITING. ❤

    1. Assassin’s are the best! (well, not in real life 😛 ) I love the name Emery, it has been on my list of names to use for a while, but Mery is cool too! But my character is not a Mery… 🙂

    1. Thank you! I hope I get to put it out in the world one day!
Time is always an issue, I luckily got a lot of time to write right now!

  5. Hi! I’m doing NaNo too. Glad to see things are going well for you. I set my goal high for a rewrite—50,000 words! So far so good but I know I’ll start to lose steam mid-month…
