Bookish Playlist: Shades of Magic

In the past months, I’ve become a total V.E. Schwab fan and addict. I’ve devoured This Savage Song and the entirety of the Shades of Magic series and I absolutely loved it. It has been a while since my last Bookish Playlist posts, due to me being on vacation for most of July and August. But I’m back and this time with a Shades of Magic playlist!

The Shades of Magic series consists of A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light.

The Songs

Do I Ever by Kensington

I let it throw me off my feet
I let it put me on my knees
What do I know?
I ought to grow but do I ever?

Can’t sit around hiding all my scars
Let them all show, let them all
(Know about, go in and embrace the inevitable)

Now let it all in
(Cover up the arm that holds your way)
Raging on too long and all will stay
Unsolved

This one is for Holland, to the boy that never had his own choices, that had been a slave to too many evil minds to count. This song has marked my experience reading this series, I have it ingrained in my mind as the “shades of magic song” and I absolutely love it.

Delilah by Florence + The Machine

It’s a different kind of danger
And the bells are ringing out
And I’m calling for my mother
As I pull the pillars down
It’s a different kind of danger
And my feet are spinning around
Never knew I was a dancer
‘Till Delilah showed me how

Too fast for freedom
Sometimes it all falls down
These chains never leave me
I keep dragging them around

This song seems to be made for Lila (not only because of the title of the song).

Night People by You Me At Six

We are night people roaming the streets
Night people, we get what we need

It’s been a hell of a week
I couldn’t bring myself to sleep
On the move, move with you
Raise a glass to tomorrow’s blues
Have a word with my nerve
Talk it off the ledge
I’m in control, invincible
Keep my world ’til the end

I think the lyrics just perfectly fit the atmosphere of the dark magic taking over the people on the street and especially in the final book, when the city, with Osaron and (I cannot spoil you) but Rhy in the castle.

You Can Be So Cruel by Royal Blood

I’m outside your window, I’m outside your door,
You’ve never been this lonely
Well I’ve never been this down before and it shows
Killing me so gently, hands right round my throat
Choking me so slowly, slashing every words down to the bone
‘Cause you can be so cruel
And that’s all I’ve ever known
Cruel, cruel world

This really reflects Alucard and Rhy in A Gathering of Shadows, I think. Their struggle and ugh I hate that I cannot spoil you but if you’ve read it, you know what I mean. I hope.

You can find the entire playlist here:

What did you think of my choices? Have you read the series? Any other songs you that remind you of the series? What is your favourite book of the Shades of Magic trilogy?

P.s. There is one song I have not included in my playlist, because it didn’t fit the vibe, but every time I listen to it, I have to think about the final book, more specifically one of the final chapters. Listen to it if you’ve read it and I’ll leave you with one word: Holland.

  1. Ooooh awesome playlist and aesthetics! So spot-on ❀
I have to say AGOS disappointed me a little bit as nothing much happened? And I was so pumped for a big adventure like the one I got from the first book… I guess it could be just one of those "it's not the book, it's me" moments but I'm hopeful for the last one in the trilogy. We'll see!
Glad to hear you're such a hardcore Schwab fan, though! πŸ™‚

    1. Thank you! I don’t really know why but I loved AGOS so much! I loved the whole competition aspect and it had that “beginning of a relationship” phase, I just loved that! The last one is again pretty different and I’ve heard many people enjoyed the third more than the second!
