Bookish Playlist | The Illuminae Files

As usual, each month I make a bookish playlist. Over the summer I read Illuminae and IT. WAS. SO. GOOD. I just read Gemina which is the second book in the series and while reading it I was constantly listening to this playlist. I just love it so much. Anyway, I decided to make this month’s playlist about The Illuminae Files!

The Songs

Broken Machine by Nothing But Thieves

I’m just a broken machine
Not who I used to be
I’m spinning out of control
Now it’s time to go

Broken Machine has AIDEN written all over. AIDEN is the artificial intelligence system on the Karenza ship and it has been damaged, therefore it’s starting to develop morals and it’s very confusing for AIDEN.

Cosmic Love by Florence + The Machine

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I’m always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

This song is about a broken heart and also has a lot of references to space-y things. I love this song for Ezra because he’s really broken-hearted at the beginning of Illuminae.

Starlight by Muse

Far away
The ship is taking me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight by Muse really represents especially Illuminae in many ways. The first part of the song refers to how they left their home and left chaos, death and destruction behind and it is also about both (major) relationships in the books.

Go Down by Kensington

To hold
A feeling of no rest in my bones
To realize it’s best to fight on
You see the light that lives inside all?
You feel alive enough to die?

Go down ready or not
You will go down ready or not
You won’t fall on solid grounds

The books have a high level of action and the characters are constantly fighting to stay alive. I think this song really shows that feeling of hopelessness, of not knowing whether it’s worth to fight on or give up.

      1. I finished it today and honestly, I was so angry right at the end when everything goes *wrong*. I was all “WHAT!!!! NO!!!! DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH MY BABIES!!!”… yeah it was very good 😉
