I’m not someone who goes to movies often or even watches movies often. I spend most of my Netflix time watching series, but if any of the below books were to be made in a movie, I’d go. Not only that, I’d drag everyone I know with me to go see it.
I don’t want to list all the popular book adaptations I haven’t seen, because that would just get embarrassing, but a couple I adored are Wonder, The Hunger Games… emh, do you see my problem?
Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
Yes, I’m aware of how often I talk about this series but damn, this would be an epic movie. Illuminae follows two characters (a hacker and a pilot) as they travel through space in a huge space ship with a shady AI system and thousands of other people. Their ship is chased by another (evil) ship, and they just try to survive. I think this book (and the rest of the series) has so much potential for a movie series. The books are already really visual, but just imagine it on a big screen! Epic battles, hackering, explosions, space ships, and even an amazing romance!
It Only Happens in The Movies by Holly Bourne
This is quite something different, but It Only Happens in the Movies would make an excellent movie as well. It’s a book about a girl researching sexism in movies and is also a love story. But it’s not the conventional love story, it takes all the (harmful/sexist) tropes from romcoms and shatters them. I adored this book and I think it could be an eye-opening, funny and relatable movie.
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is about well, quite literally, the loneliest girl in the universe. It’s about a girl called Romy with anxiety, who is up in a space ship all alone floating through space. Her only way of communicating with anyone is via a computer connection that takes literally years to send and return messages from and to earth. It’s part cutesy romance/contemporary, part thriller and I think it would make a great movie. Think: Passengers but then at least 10 times better.
A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab
It’s no secret I adore this series, but I also think they would make excellent movies or tv series. It is about four different versions of London (basically parallels), and about a magician who can travel between them. I think the setting would give it such an awesome visual aspect, with the four London’s having a different style and atmosphere. There’s also a little romance but not much and there is a lot of plot so you can really make something out of it.
Geekerella by Ashley Poston
Disney Channel Original movies were my guilty pleasure in my teens (with that I mean when I was 17-18), and Geekerella would make such an excellent Disney Channel Original movie. Geekerella is a cinderella retelling but then super geeky and it’s so much fun. I love the story and the enemies-to-lovers trope (that reminds me a lot of that Disney movie Starstruck that I have probably seen way too many times), and the characters are so geeky and adorable. It would just have that awesome “a little cliche but feel-good” vibe Disney Channel Original movies have.
This list is perfect!!!

Illuminae would make an awesome movie! I want the whole series to be turned into 3 feature length films. I’m not normally a big fan of action films because I feel they often sacrifice character development for plot but I wouldn’t have to worry about that with Illuminae.
Great list 🙂

Yes, exactly! I need them to be turned into a big movie series like the Hunger Games, with epic special effects and the story is just made for it!

Illuminae would make such an epic movie! I hope that happens some day soon and that they do the book justice.
I have not read Geekerella but I would definitely watch the movie! I was in love with A Cinderella Story back in the day!

I love Starstruck so much, honestly. Also, I really want to read The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, I’m really curious what the big mystery is. 😀

Definitely Illuminae if done well. And Geekerlla. I would love to see Warcross made into a movie, too.

Yes exactly! They need to make it good, but the book is already so good and perfectly made, I can’t imagine them messing it up so much it’d be bad.
I was thinking about Warcross too when I was writing this post but it didn’t make the cut!

I could TOTALLY see Illuminae being a movie or even a Netflix mini series. It’s gathered SUCH a huge following and it would be fun to see how they’d bring the mixed-media format to life!

Oh yes! I’d love to see it come alive on a screen, though I think it’d be a perfect cinema movie. Just imagine it on a huge screen 😮

I feel like the Illuminae series was made to have a movie adaptation — it’s action packed & the story itself is amazing, so there is already so much potential for the series! I feel like the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo would make an amazing movie: it has the most well-crafted character development, world-building, and dramatic action scenes I’ve ever read about — all in one book! But I might be a bit biased because I think the duology is an absolute masterpiece. 😆 Have you read the duology before?
Anyways, great list! I enjoyed reading your post! 📚

OMG I miss DCOMs (Don’t Look Under the Bed and H.E. Double Hockey Sticks were a couple of my faves) and Geekerella sounds like it would be so cute and perf! Love you choices 😀
I would love to see Sabriel/Abhorsen trilogy, Uglies, and The House of the Scorpion done cinematically. They all have popular similar things out there, but I’d still like to see them done. And done well!! Lol.
Recently I’ve heard about two adaptations for graphic novels I love, Locke and Key and The Umbrella Academy. I’m SUPER excited for the latter because Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, the whole cast looks amazing and UGH I just want it to be good lol.

I haven’t seen those movies! Or read those books oops. But I’m trusting your opinion on their movie-worthiness 🙂
