Bookish Playlist: The Wolves of Mercy Falls

I have been thinking about this month’s playlist for a long time now and I’ve finally decided to make this month’s playlist “The Wolves of Mercy Falls”-themed. The Wolves of Mercy Falls is a series by Maggie Stiefvater (yeah sorry again a Maggie Stiefvater Playlist) that consists of Shiver, Linger and Forever and the companion novel Sinner. I have recently read Sinner and I’m completely back to low-key obsessing over the characters.

This is a monthly feature here, and each month I’ll make a playlist related to a book or series I read. My music taste varies from folk, to indie, to rock, to a bit of punk so that is mainly what you can expect. I will post my playlist here and do a shout-out to some songs on it, and why I think they fit the book(s).

Bookish Playlist: The Raven Cycle

A month ago I created a playlist for Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and I loved it so much, I decided to make more bookish playlists. If you want to listen to the Six of Crows playlist, check it out on spotify here.

This will become a monthly feature here, and each month I’ll make a playlist related to a book or series I read. My music taste varies from folk, to indie, to rock, to a bit of punk so that is mainly what you can expect. I will post my playlist here and do a shout-out to some songs on it, and why I think they fit the book(s).

This month I’ll share my playlist for the Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. If you don’t know the series, it’s a paranormal series about four boys (Gansey, Adam, Noah and Ronan) and a girl (Blue) who are on the search for Glendower, a Welsh king that disappeared centuries ago. The series is magical and mysterious, with complex and interesting characters and I would definitely recommend it if you haven’t read it already.

The Songs

The Mute by Radical Face

And through them days I was a ghost atop my chair
My dad considered me a cross he had to bear
And in my head I’d sing apologies and stare
As my mom would hang the clothes across the line
And she would try to keep the empty from her eyes

If this song doesn’t scream Adam I don’t know what does. It also has hints towards Noah (no spoilers :P). This song was actually the one that started this playlist. I was listening to it and I could just not not make it a playlist.

Smoke and Mirrors by Imagine Dragons

All I believe
Is it a dream
That comes crashing down on me
All that I hope
Is it just smoke and mirrors
I want to believe ohh oh oh oh oh oh oh
But all that I hope
Is it just smoke and mirrors

This both refers to the dream of finding Glendower and whether that is just a myth. It also refers to Ronan and his dreamworld and how the real world seems to collapse when he finds out what his father did (again, I’m trying not to spoil you but it’s hard).

Spirits by The Strumbellas

I’ve been looking at the stars tonight
And I think oh, how I miss that bright sun
I’ll be a dreamer ’til the day I die
But they say oh, how the good die young
But we’re all strange
And maybe we don’t wanna change

Again, this song refers to Ronan, but also to the boys and Blue. They are all strange people, and have a strange relationship with death, so I think this song refers to their troubles.

Let it Go by The Neighborhood

I’m from a little city with expensive taste,
Where the cars don’t run until the engine breaks.
Wasn’t spending pennies on a mess of things,
But invested in mess with this recipe.
Couldn’t quite see what the future held
And as days went by it would tell itself.
Let it struggle just a little bit more,
Let it struggle just a little bit more.

Cars and money take quite an important role in this book. Gansey and Ronan are rich, the others not at all. That contrast causes some struggles throughout the book. The song also refers to Blue’s inability to see the future, her entire family is psychic, but Blue isn’t.

The Playlist

The song consists of 25 songs and you can listen to it below!

What did you think of this playlist? Did you like it? Do you have songs you think that should be added? Do you like this feature? Any books you’d like to see a playlist of next?

The Your Favourite Music Tag: Books & Music -> a perfect combi

This tag is created by Debbie from Debbie’s Library and I’ve taken my time to get to it, but it’s here! I barely do tags anymore like you might have noticed, but I couldn’t pass on this one. I love books and I love music so this is a perfect match! Thank you Debbie, for creating this tag and tagging me!

The Rules

  • Tag the creator of this tag and the one who tagged you
  • Pick 5 songs (or more) that you just have to listen whenever they are played
  • Pick the books/characters you think fit that song the best, and explain why you pick this book/character for this song
  • Tag some friends!

The Books!

The music!

Horns by Bryce Fox

In her heart, there’s a hole
There’s a black mark on her soul
In her hands is my heart
And she won’t let go till it’s scarred
Try to breathe, but I can’t
‘Cause the air she feeds me is damned
Got a touch like a thorn
‘Cause the girl, she’s hiding horns

This song reminds me so much of Kaz Brekker and Inej Ghafa from Six of Crows. Kaz and Inej have a complex relationship if you can say so, they are both very morally grey characters and Kaz has a thing for Inej but doesn’t want to admit it. Also the vibe of the song fits perfectly. I can create an entire post talking about music that fits with this book (but I won’t). I recently created a Six of Crows themed playlist and I love listening to it, so if you want to as well, the link is here.

Steady As She Goes by The Raconteurs

Find yourself a girl and settle down
Live a simple life in a quiet town
[…]
Well here we go again
You’ve found yourself a friend that knows you well
But no matter what you do
You’ll always feel as though you tripped and fell

I might talk about this book a little bit too often but this song reminds me a lot of The Serpent King, and especially of Travis. The Serpent King is about three friends in their final year in high school. Travis is a simple guy and he just wants to live in his little hometown, with the girl he likes, but life takes him in another direction.

All I Want by Kodaline

All I want is nothing more
To hear you knocking at my door
‘Cause if I could see your face once more
I could die a happy man I’m sure

When you said your last goodbye
I died a little bit inside
I lay in tears in bed all night
Alone without you by my side

I could quote this entire song because it’s so perfect. This song reminds me so much of Clay and Hannah from Thirteen Reasons Why. Hannah commits suicide and Clay the boy who loved her now has to live with the regrets and pain of her loss and this song captures that perfectly. (but if you loved me, why’d you leave me?)

Demons by Imagine Dragons

Don’t want to let you down
But I am hell bound
Though this is all for you
Don’t want to hide the truth
[…]
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide

This song reminds me of Will from The Infernal Devices, he is a very mysterious character because of his tragic background story that leads him to hide his true self. I think this song really reflects the darkness inside of him and the secrets he’s keeping. (also it’s about demons 😛 )

Greek Tragedy by The Wombats

I love this feeling
But I hate this part
I wanted this to work so much
I drew up our plans on a chart
Cars are flipping, I’m in hot pursuit
My character’s strong but my head is loose
She hits like ecstasy
Comes up and bangs the sense out of me
I only just finished The Sun Is Also A Star (like last night 1 am) but I realize this song fits perfectly with it. In The Sun Is Also A Star, Daniel and Natasha meet in New York, and Daniel falls head over heels for her, but it’s Natasha’s last day there, because she is an illegal immigrant and has to leave the country. I think this song perfectly describes the complex, quick and dramatic nature of their relationship (also the song mentions karaoke bars 😀 ).

I tag…

Because I barely do tags anymore, I’ll tag some people, but everybody is free to do it 🙂

I tag… Mahriya, Anushka,  Julianna, Sydney, Bex, Kelly, Jackie, All The Jazz (no pressure, I just thought you might like it, so if you don’t want to, don’t 🙂 )

Also, if you liked this post, I once did a similar one, which you can check out here.

What do you think of my choices? Do you like this music? If yes, any recommendations?

The Music Tag!

tag-header

The picture isn’t very fitting because this isn’t about books but well.. it’s good enough. I wasn’t actually tagged but I saw this at Giovanna’s blog Book Coma, and I thought it was pretty cool, so let’s get started!

Questions

  1. Name your top 3 favourite bands – this is way too few! How can I pick only 3? I’m going to try anyway. 1. Kodaline, 2. Bastille, 3. Sunset Sons.
  2. What is the last song you listened to? The Mortal Boy King from The Paper Kites. I don’t know this song very well but my house mate loves The Paper Kites, so that is why I was listening to it.
  3. What was the first concert you went to? – Imagine Dragons (& Sunset Sons as a support act) last February in The Ziggo Dome (which is one of the largest music halls in the Netherlands)
  4. If you could spend a day with your favourite singer who would it be? – Uhm a) I don’t have a favourite singer, b) I don’t think I would want that.
  5. Number five is missing? Someone is having trouble counting..
  6. Are there any songs that you can’t stand hearing? – Yes everything from Stromae, and any song that uses multiple languages. I can’t stand it.
  7. If you could have a soundtrack to your life what would it be? – Uhm, this one is hard. It would probably include songs from Kodaline, Walking On Cars, Snow Patrol, Passport to Stockholm, Coldplay and Dotan.
  8. Can you sing? – Nope, I can’t but I still do (while on my bike usually)
  9. Your favourite cheesy song? Only You by Yazoo (yes this is because of Once Upon A Time)
  10. What songs do you listen to when you are feeling down? – Every song from Kodaline, I can shuffle them all day if I feel bad. I you hadn’t noticed yet, I love Kodaline ❤
  11. First L.P./CD/MP3 you bought? – I never bought CDs, but my first MP3 was Gabrielle Aplin’s Never Fade EP.
  12. Do you like musicals if so which is your favourite? – I like musicals, and I think my favourite is either Wicked or Hairspray.
  13. Favourite musical instrument– Acoustic guitar!
  14. If you could see anyone in concert who would it be? – Bastille or Kodaline. Bastille performs in the Netherlands in November but I can’t really afford to go and I don’t know anyone who wants to go with me 😦
  15. If you wrote a song what would it be called? – *thinks very hard* *gives up*

Quick fire

Rock or pop? Rock! and then preferably indie-rock
Sing in the shower or on stage? Shower! No way I’ll sing on a stage.
Musical or concert? Concert!
Guitar or drumsGuitar
Ear phones or speaker? Either one is good, but usually ear phones because I don’t want to bother other people.
Music while you work or quiet? Music while I work, I get less distracted if I have music on and it is less boring.
One Direction or Justin Bieber? Do I really have to choose? Both are terrible. I had this three-week lasting One Direction phase when I was like 15, so I guess I’ll choose 1D.
Sing or danceSing
Instrumental or lyricsAlways lyrics!
Prince or Michael Jackson? Neither, but since I have to choose Michael Jackson.

New and Unknown Songs I Love

Earlier today I posted that I wanted to talk about other things than books, so here I am posting about music. My favourite genre in music is Indie, Rock and Folk and every combination of those genres. So if you have recommendations, please let me know! Some of the songs people once recommended to me, are now my favourites and I still listen to them at least once a week. In this list there will be four songs that I think very few people actually know and I think are amazing. I originally wanted to do 5 but I couldn’t come up with the fifth song, so there’s four.

  1. Shadow Wind by Dotan

This song came out in August, but I only found out a few days ago. The song is by Dotan, which is a Dutch musician. I’m not really into Dutch music normally, which might sound weird because I live in Holland, but usually the Dutch music isn’t really my taste. But I love Dotan! I love the whole vibe and his voice. If you like this song you should definitely look up Home and the rest of his album called 7 Layers.

By the way I have had this song stuck in my head at least half the day, I just love it so much. I can’t stand that I had the opportunity to see him perform live and I didn’t go. I wouldn’t waste another chance!

2. Reality by Passport to Stockholm

I know the Youtube video says it came out in 2015, but Spotify says it came out only 7 days ago. It has only about 500 views?? The band is so good I love them, they deserve so much more views! There are only a few songs on youtube, but there are a lot more on Spotify, and they don’t have an album yet, only singles and EPs. I’m really curious to see how they will develop themselves.

3. Kids by OneRepublic

I used to listen to OneRepublic a lot a couple of years ago, so when I heard they had new music, of course I needed to look it up. I actually like this song a lot, but I prefer the accoustic version.  Again that version of the song is only available on Spotify.

4. Glory by Bastille

You might have heard about Bastille’s new album. I love it. So far I have loved every single Bastille song I have ever heard. Yes even the very alternative weird ones with rap and old soundtracks. And you might not know this but I HATE rap music. But still Bastille has made it amazing. I might have said in the past that Bastille is genius, and I still agree. Again great music by an great band.

Top 10 Tuesday | All about audio freebie

ttt-headerI told you this was going to be a special one! But anyway, Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly returning post and is hosted by the broke and the bookish. This weeks theme is audio freebie, this means I can do whatever I want related to audio. So audio books, music, podcasts etc. I’ve decided to give it something special, because I will combine books with music. Songs that fit perfectly with a book, so songs that are about the same thing, remind me of relationships in the book, or something in the story or characters.

(I’ve been preparing this for quite a long time because finding matching songs is really hard)

1 and 2. Passenger (Alexandra Bracken) and Sun by Two Door Cinema Club, and Black Water by Of Monsters And Men

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor passenger alexandra brackenI think this song represents Nicholas’ feelings for Etta really well. And it’s also about the sea and travelling.

Black Water really represents him and his internal fight with himself and the family (and again it’s about travelling the seas).

3. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (Benjamin Alire Sáenz) and Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universeI can already imagine Ari and Dante laying in the back of the truck listening to this song and just watching the stars.

4. Ten Thousand Skies Above You (Claudia Gray) and San Francisco by the Mowlgi’s

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor ten thousand skies above you

Marguerite and Paul! Fate, love and San Francisco! This song is about it all.

5. Glass Sword (Victoria Aveyard) and Some Nights by Fun

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor glass swordMare and her internal battle between good and bad,  the revolution, being haunted by death and wanting to give up. I think this song is about it all. I feel like literally every sentence is somehow related to the book.

6. Winter (Marissa Meyer) and Open Season by High Highs

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor winter marissa meyerThis song is about Winter and her mental illness, her troubles in finding out what is real and what is not.

7. Shiver, Linger and Forever (Maggie Stiefvater) and Wolves without Teeth by Of Monsters And MenAfbeeldingsresultaat voor the wolves of mercy falls

I know this is again Of Monsters And Men but they’re just awesome okay haha. Anyway this song is all about Sam and Grace, their relationship and the wolves of course. The chorus is basically Grace’s first encounter with the wolves when she was young.

8. Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant (Veronica Roth) and Fears by Twin Wild

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor divergent book

I think this one is kinda obvious.

9. It’s Kind Of A Funny Story (Ned Vizzini) and Fix You by Coldplay

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor its kind of a funny story ned vizziniThis is Craig’s depression speaking trying to figure out how to live your life.

10. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Jenny Han) and Photograph by Ed Sheeran

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor jenny han to all the boys i've loved before book

This song is not about Lara Jean and her relationship with Peter or her crush on Josh. It’s about her and Margot and being apart from each other and how it changes their relationship.

YAY I am at the end! Finally! Not that I hated doing this but wordpress is being super annoying with all these youtube videos. I hope you liked it! Maybe I’ll do this again in the future.

Do you have a song that reminds you of a book?
