The Evil Writer Award

I saw this award over at Smudged Thoughts and I couldn’t not do this. It sounds like such a fun tag and there is no doubt I’m an evil writer *evil laugh*, all of my characters had the worst childhood ever and people drop dead like leaves in autumn in this story.

How many characters do you typically kill per book? And how many people have you killed in real life, dear? Do you… feel any remorse about this? I’m concerned about you.

I haven’t finished my book yet but I’ve written about 20k and there are is only one death on paper, but there are probably about four-ish that died before the story started. I plan on having a massive kill-party near halfway and probably another near the end. But okay seriously, I expect there to be at least 20 deaths (not including the ones that died before), but probably no major characters.

I’m not going to answer the second part of this question 😛

Do you prefer to use weapons of mass destruction like explosions and famine and world war or more personal torture like killing family and friends and pets?

Personal torture, thank you very much. That way I can cause my characters some more pain because apparently, I like doing that.

Are you more like Loki, who perpetrates great evil with a creepy grin, or… give me a minute… Darth Vader, who secretly weeps inside his… fake head, whilst destroying the world?

Creepy grin. But at the same time, I cry for my characters.

What is the most dastardly crime you have ever committed as a writer?

So far, killed the (only?) person my character loved, in a very very awful way *grins*.

What kind of chocolate do you most like to devour as you burn things? White, milk, semisweet, or dark? Bonus points if you are so evil you find unsweetened cacao palatable!

Milk! I love milk chocolate. While we’re on the topic *takes a bite of chocolate*. You can never have enough chocolate while writing.

What is your villainous title? You may not have “Evil Overlord” because that one’s mine.

Uhm… Miss Heartbreak. Because I like to break my characters’ hearts (I’ll fix them again, I promise).

Which of your characters would actually be a match for you if you were to duke it out one on one?

Emery. No doubt. She’d kill me on sight. But honestly, I wouldn’t want to meet Felton or Noa in a dark alley either. Brim I could probably fight, and like, not lose to in the first few seconds.

Which character, in all the many books you have undoubtedly written, is most likely to be your Archnemesis?

*has not even 1 finished draft of book*

*smiles sheepishly*

I don’t know.

Do you wear a cape? Face paint? A mask? Special underpants? Or do you hide in plain sight… like Moriarty? Give me details!

I wear my special cloak because CLOAKS.

Are you an evil writer like me? Then you should do this tag, because it’s lots of fun! What is the worst thing you’ve done to your characters? How many characters will die in your book?

The 777 Challenge (aka snippets from my novel)

I was tagged by the lovely Savannah over at The Book Prophet for this tag, so thank you Savannah!

This tag basically works like this: you pick seven lines from your seventh page of your work in progress. However, I’m going to do it a little differently. I will pick the seventh line of each of my first seven chapters.

7th line of the first chapter: And she had tried a lot.

7th line of the second chapter: In dreams, he knew that it would end, in reality, there was no end to his agony.

7th line of the third chapter: A figure in the back, behind the table filled with metal parts.

7th line of the fourth chapter: “Quietly.”

7th line of the fifth chapter: The sun shone softly through the misty sky, but apparently it was bright enough to bring out the umbrellas.

7th line of the sixth chapter: She loved pretending that the pretentious house was her own.

7th line of the seventh chapter: Meaning: she now had to go ask [not yet named character] for another job.

divider1letstalk

I love how incredibly random these lines are haha, they make completely no sense out of context, some aren’t even grammatically correct.

What’s the seventh line of your fourth (or third or seventh or whatever-th) chapter? I’d love to read it! Also if you want to do this tag, give it a go! I’d love to read all of your lines (you can also do it the “official” way of course).

Camp NaNoWriMo Weekly Update #3

It was a bit of a strange week, on some days I wrote a lot on some not at all. For those who (still) don’t know what it is, Camp NaNoWriMo is basically a smaller version of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), in which you can set your own goal. For NaNoWriMo your goal is 50k, but for Camp NaNoWriMo I set my goal to 15k.

I have just finished the one-but-last chapter I was planning to write for Camp, and tomorrow and the day after I will write the last. It feels good to have so many words down already, but I feel I’m getting into the mid-month slump. Luckily, or sadly, depending on how you see it, I will only be participating for two more days. I’m going on vacation and won’t have my laptop with me.

I am really looking forward to going away and I plan on getting some more inspiration while I’m away and maybe add some minor storylines and add some character development, things like that! I think a small break from writing can really help me get inspired again! I will be writing (or at least try to) while I’m away, but that will be on paper. With an actual pen. Yeah, I guess I’ll see how that goes!

Discussion: Reasons to write: Fantasy vs. Contemporary

So far I have attempted to write a contemporary novel and I am currently working on a fantasy novel. It is very different from my contemporary story and so far I am loving it. For this discussion, I wanted to discuss some of the differences and pros and cons of writing these two genres and compare them.

Camp NaNoWriMo Weekly Update #2

Week two of Camp NaNoWriMo has just ended. For those who don’t know what it is, Camp NaNoWriMo is basically a smaller version of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), in which you can set your own goal. For NaNoWriMo your goal is 50k, but for Camp NaNoWriMo I set my goal to 15k. This is not a lot but I’ll be going on a vacation in the middle of July and won’t be able to write from then on.

I am currently in a small writing slump, I’m at a chapter and I don’t really know how to finish it. I’m sure I’ll figure it out once I get myself to actually write some more. Yesterday I wrote only 60 words and that’s a big disappointment for me. I can do better! I’m going to try to write at least 1000 words today but I’m pretty sure that won’t reach it. It’s already late afternoon, and I haven’t written more than 150 words… I’ll try though!

I found that I am really good at randomly improvising and adding in characters or storylines on a whim. Sometimes it just clicks and I write a thousand words about stuff that isn’t even in my outline. I created a character that I think will have quite an important role later in the story. I’ve also gotten to know my characters better, especially Noa. I really like how all the characters come alive on the paper.

Camp NaNoWriMo: weekly update #1

I’m cheating and writing this way ahead of time. When you’re reading this, I’ll be at a festival and not writing (haha nope I forgot to schedule it so it’s Monday now and I need to go to uni). As I’m writing this it’s Wednesday, and Camp NaNoWriMo hasn’t even started yet.

I also have an exam this week, and well, today I’m at a festival so I won’t be writing much either.

My novel idea is an adapted version of the one I wrote about a few weeks ago. It’s called Our Shattered Minds (I think you heard about it by now, I’ve talked about it so so much haha). It’s about four outcasts: an assassin who loves playing with other’s hearts (Emery), a blacksmith who just wants to be left alone (Felton), a nanny with anger issues (Noa) (I hate the word nanny almost as much as Noa does xD) and a wanderer running from his past (Brim). They live in a world with magic, but it’s rare and special. They all hide their powers, which are blood, fire/smoke, seeing the future, and electricity respectively. People with magic have been disappearing and an underground rebellion arises, and all four of them get caught up in different ways. This is where their stories come together.

I finished my outline, which I’m super proud of because last time I made a super shitty one. This one is much better and I actually followed some guidelines and tips. It’s basically: we’re all okay – wth is going on?? – okay we can fix this – we’re screwed – maybe we can? – rising action – epicness – omg point – the end 😀

Doesn’t that sounds good?? But in all seriousness, I divided my book into 11 parts, which I then divided into 4 chapters which are written from the four different perspectives. I’m not sure how that will work in the second half of my book because then the characters are often together but I’ll see what happens.

So with 44 chapters, which I think will be about 2k each, I’ll hopefully end up with an 88k manuscript. Which kind of scares me a lot because 88k is so much *help*

I’m kind of writing this with the idea in mind that there might be a sequel? One day? I’m seeing a future of more epicness with my characters.

This part of the post I wrote on Monday.

Stats

Beginning: 5,096
Day 1: 1,263 (total: 6,393) (something is wrong in this calculation but I don’t feel like checking it haha)
Day 2: – (total: 6.393)

Snippets

I worked on the third chapter, which is about Felton. Today I’m going to try to write the fourth about Noa today.

It was silent in the room again and normally he would love the silence, but this silence was loaded and heavy, like an anchor pulling down his mood.

He was good at judging people, at seeing through the smile they plastered on their face, and this girl definitely had her secrets.

In these moments, all he wanted was to just leave. Leave this city, leave his job, the people. But he knew that if he left, he would truly not have anything left.

How is NaNoWriMo going for you guys? Have you written some things you’re proud of already? What are you most excited about in your WIP?

Writing: A Poem, A Snippet and Some Writing Ideas

I normally post on Sundays and I was planning to do so yesterday as well, but life got in the way (and also this thing I did on twitter). Oops. Anyway, I’m going to make it up to you by posting today! It’s even more elaborate than I initially was going to make it, because I got inspired yesterday night (as in: in the middle of the night because who needs sleep when you can write? Me, obviously.).

A Poem

Maybe I didn’t rise
from the ashes
of my shattered heart,
Maybe I just
got up
and started walking

Maybe I didn’t mend
all the pieces
of my fractured heart,
Maybe I just
picked them up
and hoped for the best

Maybe it didn’t
make me stronger,
Maybe
I did.

~I’m not strong because of it, I’m strong despite of it.

Story Ideas

I’ve been “working” on my current writing project for a few months now and I like it but it doesn’t really interest me that much anymore, so I’m giving myself a break from it. Maybe I get back to it, maybe I don’t. At this moment, I honestly don’t care that much… But I do have several new ideas I’d like to work on of which one you might have heard about before (on Mahriya’s blog, because I won this round of The Typewriter’s Project :D).

  • Our Shattered Minds

This is a story/novel idea about 4 very different people who sort of share one mind. I’m not 100% sure whether it will be a multiple personality disorder kind of thing, or a more sense8 kind of thing (in which the characters are connected without them being the same “person”). But there is magic and in some way, the characters split their lives which messes up the magic in the world (which is called Caligan). They’ll have to fix it. It’s all very vague yet but I really like it. If there ever were a sequel I would call it These Fractured Shadows.

If you click on the image and press show full size you can read the small text 🙂

  • What We Wrote on the Bathroom Walls

This is a story idea I had a few weeks ago and it kept me up half the night. I really need to get back into a regular sleeping schedule that doesn’t involve me falling asleep past 1 am every single night.  The story is in it’s entirely told by things people wrote on bathroom walls. It’ll be a story about high school and bullying. I’m still struggling with the format and how it’s supposed to look and work but I really like this idea.

A Snippet

This is a snippet from the first story/novel idea I wrote about, Our Shattered Minds. This is about one of the characters (she’s an assassin and badass).

This was the part she enjoyed most. The flirtatious eye-lid fluttering, the giggling about silly jokes, the hasty brushing of fingertips and lips, the pleasure of luring someone in. It was the part of anticipation, of wonder. The part of seduction and sensation.

What came next was something that Emery wouldn’t gladly admit made her feel at ease. The power of having someone’s life in your hands, completely and utterly, was something that topped every drug she had ever tried. And she had tried a lot. She liked it bloody, knifes and swords, sometimes even a gun, but her orders were to be swift and clean. So she was. With a quick swipe of her fingertips along the man’s jaw her magic did its job. She could feel his heart beat slowing, like it were her own. Every single drop of blood in his body slowed its movement, finally coming to a stand-still. His heart stopped, and hers bounced louder in her chest.

Euphoria. That was what it felt like.

I hope you liked this! I’m going to try to do bi-weekly writing posts, which means on Sunday I’ll alternate between Newbie Bloggers and writing. Are you also a writer? Had any cool story ideas lately?
