Bookish Playlist: Shades of Magic

In the past months, I’ve become a total V.E. Schwab fan and addict. I’ve devoured This Savage Song and the entirety of the Shades of Magic series and I absolutely loved it. It has been a while since my last Bookish Playlist posts, due to me being on vacation for most of July and August. But I’m back and this time with a Shades of Magic playlist!

The Shades of Magic series consists of A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light.

Bookish Playlist: The Wolves of Mercy Falls

I have been thinking about this month’s playlist for a long time now and I’ve finally decided to make this month’s playlist “The Wolves of Mercy Falls”-themed. The Wolves of Mercy Falls is a series by Maggie Stiefvater (yeah sorry again a Maggie Stiefvater Playlist) that consists of Shiver, Linger and Forever and the companion novel Sinner. I have recently read Sinner and I’m completely back to low-key obsessing over the characters.

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor the wolves of mercy falls series

This is a monthly feature here, and each month I’ll make a playlist related to a book or series I read. My music taste varies from folk, to indie, to rock, to a bit of punk so that is mainly what you can expect. I will post my playlist here and do a shout-out to some songs on it, and why I think they fit the book(s).

Bookish Playlist: The Raven Cycle

A month ago I created a playlist for Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and I loved it so much, I decided to make more bookish playlists. If you want to listen to the Six of Crows playlist, check it out on spotify here.

This will become a monthly feature here, and each month I’ll make a playlist related to a book or series I read. My music taste varies from folk, to indie, to rock, to a bit of punk so that is mainly what you can expect. I will post my playlist here and do a shout-out to some songs on it, and why I think they fit the book(s).

This month I’ll share my playlist for the Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. If you don’t know the series, it’s a paranormal series about four boys (Gansey, Adam, Noah and Ronan) and a girl (Blue) who are on the search for Glendower, a Welsh king that disappeared centuries ago. The series is magical and mysterious, with complex and interesting characters and I would definitely recommend it if you haven’t read it already.

The Songs

The Mute by Radical Face

And through them days I was a ghost atop my chair
My dad considered me a cross he had to bear
And in my head I’d sing apologies and stare
As my mom would hang the clothes across the line
And she would try to keep the empty from her eyes

If this song doesn’t scream Adam I don’t know what does. It also has hints towards Noah (no spoilers :P). This song was actually the one that started this playlist. I was listening to it and I could just not not make it a playlist.

Smoke and Mirrors by Imagine Dragons

All I believe
Is it a dream
That comes crashing down on me
All that I hope
Is it just smoke and mirrors
I want to believe ohh oh oh oh oh oh oh
But all that I hope
Is it just smoke and mirrors

This both refers to the dream of finding Glendower and whether that is just a myth. It also refers to Ronan and his dreamworld and how the real world seems to collapse when he finds out what his father did (again, I’m trying not to spoil you but it’s hard).

Spirits by The Strumbellas

I’ve been looking at the stars tonight
And I think oh, how I miss that bright sun
I’ll be a dreamer ’til the day I die
But they say oh, how the good die young
But we’re all strange
And maybe we don’t wanna change

Again, this song refers to Ronan, but also to the boys and Blue. They are all strange people, and have a strange relationship with death, so I think this song refers to their troubles.

Let it Go by The Neighborhood

I’m from a little city with expensive taste,
Where the cars don’t run until the engine breaks.
Wasn’t spending pennies on a mess of things,
But invested in mess with this recipe.
Couldn’t quite see what the future held
And as days went by it would tell itself.
Let it struggle just a little bit more,
Let it struggle just a little bit more.

Cars and money take quite an important role in this book. Gansey and Ronan are rich, the others not at all. That contrast causes some struggles throughout the book. The song also refers to Blue’s inability to see the future, her entire family is psychic, but Blue isn’t.

The Playlist

The song consists of 25 songs and you can listen to it below!

What did you think of this playlist? Did you like it? Do you have songs you think that should be added? Do you like this feature? Any books you’d like to see a playlist of next?

New and Unknown Songs I Love

Earlier today I posted that I wanted to talk about other things than books, so here I am posting about music. My favourite genre in music is Indie, Rock and Folk and every combination of those genres. So if you have recommendations, please let me know! Some of the songs people once recommended to me, are now my favourites and I still listen to them at least once a week. In this list there will be four songs that I think very few people actually know and I think are amazing. I originally wanted to do 5 but I couldn’t come up with the fifth song, so there’s four.

  1. Shadow Wind by Dotan

This song came out in August, but I only found out a few days ago. The song is by Dotan, which is a Dutch musician. I’m not really into Dutch music normally, which might sound weird because I live in Holland, but usually the Dutch music isn’t really my taste. But I love Dotan! I love the whole vibe and his voice. If you like this song you should definitely look up Home and the rest of his album called 7 Layers.

By the way I have had this song stuck in my head at least half the day, I just love it so much. I can’t stand that I had the opportunity to see him perform live and I didn’t go. I wouldn’t waste another chance!

2. Reality by Passport to Stockholm

I know the Youtube video says it came out in 2015, but Spotify says it came out only 7 days ago. It has only about 500 views?? The band is so good I love them, they deserve so much more views! There are only a few songs on youtube, but there are a lot more on Spotify, and they don’t have an album yet, only singles and EPs. I’m really curious to see how they will develop themselves.

3. Kids by OneRepublic

I used to listen to OneRepublic a lot a couple of years ago, so when I heard they had new music, of course I needed to look it up. I actually like this song a lot, but I prefer the accoustic version.  Again that version of the song is only available on Spotify.

4. Glory by Bastille

You might have heard about Bastille’s new album. I love it. So far I have loved every single Bastille song I have ever heard. Yes even the very alternative weird ones with rap and old soundtracks. And you might not know this but I HATE rap music. But still Bastille has made it amazing. I might have said in the past that Bastille is genius, and I still agree. Again great music by an great band.
